Tanweer's latest production—the largest Greek cinematic endeavor of the year—brings to the screen the extraordinary life of legendary folk singer Stelios Kazantzidis, whose voice defined an era and touched the hearts of Greeks around the world.
Directed by Yorgos Tsemberopoulos and written by Katerina Bei, the film stars Christos Mastoras as Kazantzidis, alongside an ensemble cast including Klelia Renesi, Asimenia Voulioti, Agoritsa Oikonomou, Dimitris Kapouranis, and Anna Symeonidou. The cast also features Giorgos Gallos, Giorgos Karamichos, Nikos Psarras, Giorgos Giannopoulos, Diamantis Karanastasis, Ilias Valasis, and Pericles Siountas.

Screenwriter Katerina Bei researched Kazantzidis’ life extensively to craft a complete portrait of the artist and the man. “I was fortunate to have the input of Giorgos Lianis and Kostas Balachoutis, who have written extensively about Kazantzidis and his era,” says Bei.
Once the screenplay was nearly complete, producer Dionyssis Samiotis and Bei approached director Yorgos Tsemberopoulos. “When I read the script, I found it resonated deeply with me, offering a structured narrative with a clear beginning, middle, and end,” says the director, who highlights the challenge of condensing decades of a man’s life—from age 13 to 35—into two hours of screen time.
In this film, I aim to explore the soul of a man whose songs spoke to millions. With the power and magic of his voice, Stelios Kazantzidis opened doors for himself and those around him. Yet his family, love affairs, and overwhelming fame left little room for personal happiness.
The film captures the creation of iconic songs that Greeks continue to sing and dance to in gatherings and celebrations. At the same time, it chronicles Greece’s evolution from poverty to a modern era, offering insight into the roots of our current times.
Cinematically, the film focuses on character authenticity and emotional truth. As the years progress, settings and costumes transform rapidly, reflecting the times without overt explanation. The story takes us into spaces and scenarios familiar from classic black-and-white films, brought to life with today’s cinematic tools, unveiling the backstage genesis of Greece’s first major music stars.
